Fall 2011: Anticipation, My Only Friend
Published on January 30, 2012
Issue #7
Sphere’s 7th issue revolves around the theme of mutability. It’s about changes that occur in our lives, and the incredibly raw emotions we feel as we are shaped by these events.
This is an issue about anticipating the future, wherever we are. The poetry and fiction featured here evoke feelings of hope, despair, excitement, and sometimes, disappointment. Whether we’re walking through a college campus, sitting near a rushing river, or standing next to a hospital bed—surroundings, situations, and emotions change. But that moment of suspense before a heart breaks, before the axe falls, before a newborn’s first cries are heard—that feeling of heart-pounding suspense can be counted on.
Anticipation remains.

Summer 2011 - Call to Order
Published on July 12, 2011
Issue #6
The summer 2011 issue of Sphere Literary Magazine features poetry, fiction, and nonfiction that illuminate simple subjects with precise details. Feeling overshadowed by a brother, a young soldier’s first battle, and even a drive down the highway all find new resonance in storytelling here through the observations of our contributing writers. Undergraduates run into the telling detail time and time again, and this issue features a commanding group of voices who effectively call those details to order and make them work in refreshing ways. Our writers have transformed everything from spiders to church hymnals, and they’ve given us a better appreciation for the nuts and bolts of what we do.

Winter 2011 - Morning Violence
Published on January 24, 2011
Issue #5
This issue of Sphere Literary Magazine explores the many voices of the bitter, the desperate, and the nostalgic. They speak of memories tarnished, ideal scenarios never played out, and hopes fallen from their creaky pedestals. Whether it’s a love gone sour or an insidious cat foiling a plan for romance, these writers touch on the inner violence of their dissatisfied speakers. A fascination with the mildly grotesque ties all of these characters together, even the less troubled ones. They invoke visceral images, many of which are built out of long streams of well-placed alliteration. This winter, each of our writers has given us clarity in dark moments, like a red morning sun shedding light on a new day.

Summer 2010 - One More Step
Published on June 21, 2010
Issue #4
While reviewing pieces for our fourth issue, we at Sphere realized that each of the writers submitting to us this season had tuned into something vital not only in writing, but in life. As hard as it can be to begin something, or to see something end, there is another difficulty that can be forgotten in the flow of a poem or a story: the struggle to carry on. One More Step is an issue that examines the choices people make in the middle of things, whether they’re up against the unsolvable problems of a culture’s past or a failed memory, or even looking for a way out of old love. While the steps we take may not always be in the right direction, the most important thing is to keep moving — allowing, inducing, and embracing change. We want to thank all of the wonderful contributing writers this season. Together, we proudly take one more step forward.

MAY 2009 - Amorphous
Published on May 6, 2010
Issue #2
This issue of Sphere, " Amorphous", is a compilation of literary works that have been collected and reviewed since June 2008. I want to thank the contributors for being patient while my editors and I addressed certain matters that were necessary to improve the overall quality of Sphere and during the construction of this new website. This issue celebrates many things: The foundation of a new fellowship in the international writing community, one that is fostered and supported by students across the globe; the legacy of The Literary Review, which extended its mission to include students who are eager to get involved in the literary world; and the hard work and vision of many who now have an outlet for their work. A special thanks to Walter Cummins, our Chief Advisor, and David Daniel, our Faculty Advisor, to the Creative Writing Program and the Becton College at Fairleigh Dickinson University, to Martin Green the department chair, and to Theresa Montalbano. I also want to applaud the hard work of my editors and readers; we had a huge work load and a limited staff. Your cooperation and participation is highly appreciated.

Winter 2010 - Triskele
Published on January 2, 2010
Issue #3
As this year draws to a close, we find that our current issue, Triskele, focuses on new, different, and often hidden faces. Our writers illuminate for us the multifaceted surfaces of not only places and people, but the color of the lens we see them through. The subjects shimmer and catch the light in ways that we may not ordinarily notice, renewing an appreciating of characters’ humanity or embellishing the details in their temporal and ever-shifting faces as they reflect upon truth and life in the span of a few lines or pages. As more people gain interest in Sphere, we have been able to reach a wider audience of student writers, and in turn expand the voice and scope of our writing community. We applaud all of the wonderful writers who were accepted in this issue, as well a give a great big thank you to our team of readers and editors. Please enjoy.
